Hyaluronic acid naturally distributed throughout the human body where, among other noteworthy properties, it holds water in the intercellular matrix of dermal connective tissue and contributes to the elasticity of the skin. This state-of-the-art property can hold many more times its own weight. As we age, however, the skin’s hyaluronic acid content diminishes, resulting in a loss of viscoelasticity in the skin that appears visibly as wringles. In the personal care field, the 1982 introduction of “Night Repare” sparked an explosion of formulas containing hyaluronic acid.
